Panels

4″ panel, R-27 to R-36

High-density polyurethane and QuadCore cores from Norbec and Kingspan, factory-insulated with the vapor-tight cam-lock seams visible at the wall-to-ceiling joints above. A 4″ cooler panel rates R-27 to R-36; 6″ is available for high-ambient or freezer builds. NSF/ANSI 7 certified for direct food contact, FM-approved and ASTM E84 fire-rated.

2
Refrigeration

KeepRite evaporator + condensing unit

Ceiling-mounted dual-fan evaporator, BTU-matched to your cubic feet, door cycles, and product load. Self-contained or remote. We quote both and let the math decide.

3
Door

Insulated swing door

Coldmatic 3″ insulated cooler door with a magnetic perimeter gasket, Kason hardware, and self-closing cam-lift hinges. Sized to your access path and door-cycle frequency. Sliding and motorized variants available on high-traffic builds.

4
Hardware

Cam-lock latch + diamond-plate kickplate

Heavy-gauge cam-lock latch with safety-release from the inside. Diamond-plate kickplate covers the bottom of every WFE cooler door. Stops pallet-jack and cart damage before it reaches the panel.

5
Controls

Digital temperature controller

Wall-mounted at eye level between the doors. Set-point, defrost schedule, high-temp alarm. Backed up by an independent analog gauge so cooler temp is readable even if power is out. Remote-monitoring add-ons available for multi-unit operators.

Walk-In Cooler, Walk-In Fridge, Walk-In Refrigerator — Same Equipment, Different Names

Customers ask for a walk-in cooler, a walk-in fridge, or a commercial walk-in refrigerator. They're all the same equipment.

The terms describe an insulated, refrigerated room held above 32°F (typically 35-40°F for general food storage).

WFE builds the same product regardless of what your team calls it. What matters for the build is the operating temperature, the panel insulation rating, and how often the door cycles. Those drive the equipment specification, not the noun on your purchase order.

Walk-In Coolers for Sale in Ontario — Custom-Built, Not Catalog

A walk-in cooler for sale from WFE is custom-built to your floor plan, not pulled off a shelf, with refrigeration sized to your load.

We build walk-in coolers for restaurants, grocery stores, and food processors across Ontario. Custom takes about 2 weeks instead of a stock 8×8 next Tuesday, and the cooler fits your space, the door swings the right way, and warranty goes through the people who built it.

For a full breakdown of what drives walk-in cooler cost in Ontario, see our walk-in cooler cost guide.

Refrigeration Units for Walk-In Coolers — Sizing, Selection, Installation

The refrigeration unit is what does the actual cooling: compressor, condenser, evaporator coil, expansion valve.

Get the size wrong and your walk-in cooler short-cycles (compressor turns on and off constantly, wearing itself out) or pulls down too slowly (food spoils before temperature drops).

WFE specs refrigeration units for walk-in coolers from Heatcraft and KeepRite, both with broad parts and service distribution across Ontario, which matters when a component fails five years from now.

The walk-in cooler refrigeration unit you need depends on cubic feet of cooled space, door-open frequency, product load (50 lb of warm chicken needs far more cooling capacity than 50 lb of pre-chilled produce), and outdoor ambient temperature. We calculate it, you sign off, we install.

If you're replacing an existing unit that's reaching end of life, we can quote a like-for-like replacement, or our repair partner can diagnose the existing equipment first.

NSF/ANSI 7 Certified Panels for CFIA and Health Canada Builds

NSF/ANSI 7 (Commercial Refrigerators and Freezers) is the North American sanitation standard that certifies walk-in cooler panels, sealants, and interior finishes for direct food contact environments.

CFIA-registered food processors, grocery operations, and any facility subject to Health Canada inspection should specify NSF-certified panels.

WFE's standard commercial walk-in cooler panels, supplied from Norbec and Kingspan, meet NSF/ANSI 7 requirements and carry FM-approved, ASTM E84, and CAN/ULC-S102 fire ratings. We can provide the certification documentation your CFIA or HACCP audit requires.

New vs Used Walk-In Coolers — Choosing the Right Path for Ontario & Canada

Most WFE walk-in cooler installs are new builds, custom-sized to your floor plan with factory-warrantied refrigeration. We also supply certified pre-owned and refurbished walk-in coolers, shop-serviced and shipped with a 3-month functional warranty on the refrigeration plant.

See our used walk-in coolers and freezers for current inventory and condition reports.

WFE also supplies and installs walk-in coolers in Canada beyond Ontario on a project basis. Flag the location early so freight and crew travel land in the quote, not as a surprise.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask first.

How long does a walk-in cooler installation take?

Most standard walk-in coolers (8×8 through 12×16) are fully installed in about 2 weeks from quote approval, against an industry norm of 4 to 6 weeks. Custom builds and large multi-zone projects can run 8 to 12 weeks depending on panel supply lead time. Because WFE uses in-house crews, install scheduling isn't a bottleneck.

What size walk-in cooler do I actually need?

The standard rule of thumb is 1.0–1.5 cubic feet of cooler space per meal served per day, but the real answer depends on product mix, delivery cadence, and your prep workflow. Book a site visit and we'll size it from your kitchen plan.

Self-contained vs. remote refrigeration — which should I choose?

Self-contained units are simpler and cheaper to install (the compressor and condenser sit on top of the cooler). Remote condensing units cost more upfront but quiet the kitchen, reduce heat load on your HVAC, and last longer because the compressor runs in cooler outdoor air. We size both and quote the trade-off.

Do I need a permit for a walk-in cooler in Ontario?

Electrical and refrigeration permits almost always apply. Building permits depend on your municipality and whether the cooler is freestanding or integrated into a renovation. WFE manages the full permit package for every install.

Can WFE install a walk-in cooler outdoors?

Yes. Outdoor walk-in coolers use weather-rated panels, sealed seams, and condensing units rated for Ontario's temperature swings (–30°C to +35°C). Outdoor builds typically run 10–15% higher cost than indoor equivalents.

Do you serve outside the GTA?

Yes. WFE installs across the full province of Ontario, from the GTA through Southwestern, Eastern, and Northern Ontario. Larger projects across Canada are handled on a scheduled-installation basis. See our service-areas index for the city pages with travel-time details.

What sets WFE apart from other walk-in cooler installers in Ontario?

WFE designs, builds, and installs every walk-in cooler with one in-house crew. Custom commercial walk-in coolers are sized to your floor plan, refrigeration load, and operating temperature rather than picked off a catalog. The same WFE team that quotes the project also commissions it, so the warranty conversation in year five goes back to the people who built the unit.
