Service / Custom Cold Storage

Custom cold storage & industrial cold rooms in Ontario & Canada.

Industrial-scale cold storage built to your floor plan, from 500 to 20,000+ sq ft. We build cold storage warehouses, multi-zone cold rooms, and dual-temperature industrial fridge and freezer builds. WFE engineers the envelope, sizes the refrigeration to your real product load, and runs the install with our own crews.

Where the catalog stops

Most projects fit a catalog walk-in. This is what we build when yours doesn't.

Catalog

8×8 → 20×20 · single zone · off-shelf refrigeration

Custom

engineered envelope · sized to product load · in-house build

01

Envelope > 20×20

Above 400 sq ft, catalog refrigeration tables start to under-spec the load.

02

Ceilings > 12 ft

Pallet-racked warehouses run 14–22 ft clear. Evaporator placement and air-throw change.

03

Multi-zone in one envelope

Cooler + freezer + ante-room sharing walls. One permit, one refrigeration corridor.

04

Humidity beyond 80–85% RH

Cannabis cure (55–62% RH), produce rooms (90%+ RH), or any envelope past defaults.

05

Structural attachment

Penetrations through the shell, loading-bay integration, MEP tie-in. Engineering load goes up materially.

Detail · Cold-Room Doors

The under-spec'd component on most projects we replace.

Door-cycle frequency drives the gasket spec. Ambient temperature outside the door drives the heater-wire spec. We document both at the design stage so the door survives the operation it was built for.

Why It Matters

"The wrong door costs more in lifetime energy and gasket replacement than the upgrade ever would have."

1
Hinges

Cam-lift self-closing hinges

Spring cam-lift hinges and Kason hardware lift the leaf clear on opening, then self-close it after every pass. Rated for high-cycle dock-side use.

2
Latch

Safety-release latch

Positive-latch handle with an interior safety release, so no one is ever shut inside. Lockable for after-hours security.

3
Kickplate

Diamond-plate kickplate

Pallet-jack and forklift impact rated, wrapping the bottom of the leaf. Stops cart damage before it reaches the panel.

4
Frame

Aluminium-wrapped frame & leaf

Coldmatic insulated leaf, 3″ cooler or 4″ freezer, in a continuous aluminium wrap-around frame with the vapor barrier carried through the panel interface.

5
Controls

Digital controller + dial gauge

Wall-mounted digital controller for set-point, defrost, and high-temp alarm, backed by an independent analog dial that reads the room even with the power out.

Why Most Contractors Sub It Out

Most general contractors don't self-perform refrigeration. They sub it to two separate trades.

Panel installer and refrigeration tech. The seam between them is where commissioning problems show up six months in.

How Most Contractors Run It

GC's Panel Installer

Erects the envelope. Schedule A. Leaves before refrigeration crew arrives.

The Seam

Refrigeration Sub

Different schedule, different supervisor. Two crews never met on site.

Six months later: panel installer didn't leave the right rough-in. Refrigeration tech can't access the line set. Commissioning fails at the seam.

How WFE Runs It

WFE In-House Crew

Same team for panel installation and refrigeration tie-in. One schedule. One supervisor. One warranty across both scopes.

There's no seam to argue over six months later.

In-house build crews handling both scopes are rare in this market.

Industrial Builds

Industrial fridges, freezers, and combo builds.

Operations needing an industrial fridge, industrial freezer, or industrial fridge freezer combo typically need an envelope larger than the standard reach-in or stock walk-in market serves. WFE doesn't sell self-contained industrial units off a catalog. We build the envelope and the refrigeration plant as one integrated system.

For pallet-racked cold storage warehouses, evaporator placement pulls up to the clear-height ceiling. Forklift turning radius and door clearances drive the layout. Loading-bay integration calls for door specs that survive constant cycling. Send us the floor plan and the racking layout. We'll quote from your actual operating profile.

Some operators find us by searching for world cold storage. That's us: World Food Equipment, building custom cold storage across Ontario and Canada. For the cooler-or-freezer decision itself, start with our walk-in cooler vs walk-in freezer guide.

FAQ · 07 Answers

Cold storage questions, answered.

01

What counts as "custom cold storage" vs a standard walk-in?

Anything above roughly 20×20, anything with ceilings above 12 feet, anything with multi-zone temperature control in one envelope, anything with humidity control beyond the catalog 80–85% range, and anything with structural penetrations through the host building shell. If the project fits a stock walk-in spec, we build it under our walk-in cooler or walk-in freezer service. If it doesn’t, it’s custom.
02

How long does an industrial cold storage build take?

Most industrial cold storage builds run 6 to 12 weeks from quote approval to commissioning. Panel supply lead times account for most of that window. Multi-zone builds and projects with structural reinforcement run longer. Because WFE uses in-house crews, on-site install scheduling isn't the bottleneck.
03

Can WFE handle multi-zone layouts (cooler + freezer + ante-room)?

Yes. Multi-zone is one of the most common custom cold storage builds we run. Single envelope, shared refrigeration corridor, independent zone temperatures, and one permit package. Multi-zone builds typically cost 15 to 25% less than the equivalent volume in separate envelopes.
04

Do you build cannabis-grade cold rooms?

Yes. Cannabis cold storage requires precise humidity control (typically 55 to 62% RH for cured product), security-rated doors with audit-trail access logging, and finishes that pass Health Canada inspection. WFE has built cannabis cold rooms across Ontario for licensed producers.
05

What's the minimum and maximum size you build?

Practical minimum for a "custom" project is roughly 500 sq ft, below that a standard walk-in is usually the better economic choice. Practical maximum on a single envelope runs to 20,000+ sq ft, depending on host building structure. We have installed across that full range in Ontario.
06

Do you handle structural, electrical, and mechanical permits?

Yes. Industrial cold storage builds typically require electrical, refrigeration, mechanical, and (for structural envelopes) building permits. WFE files every permit, manages every inspection, and hands over the certification package at commissioning.
07

How is your pricing different from a standard walk-in catalog?

Industrial cold storage is project-based pricing, not catalog pricing. Quote inputs are floor plan, set point, product load, door-cycle profile, host-building structure, and project location. Most quotes go out within 5 to 10 business days of a site visit.
