Walk-in entry

Swing doors

The standard walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer door: an insulated leaf on self-closing hinges with a latch you can open from inside. Coldmatic swing doors carry Kason hardware.

Best for: Restaurant and grocery walk-ins, foot traffic, hand carts.

3D model of a walk-in cooler with a wide automatic sliding door and a personnel-size swing man door beside it

Walk-in entry

Man doors

A personnel-size insulated door for foot traffic only. Set beside a large sliding or vertical-lift opening, it lets staff walk in without cycling the big door.

Best for: Warehouse cold rooms, mechanical rooms, ante-rooms.

3D model of a walk-in cooler with a manual insulated sliding door hung from a top track, diamond-plate kickplate

Sliding

Sliding doors

An insulated leaf that hangs from a top track and slides along the wall instead of swinging out. Nothing swings into the aisle, and the opening can run wider than a swing door.

Best for: Tight aisles, wider openings, pallet-jack traffic.

3D model of a walk-in cooler with an automatic sliding door: gearmotor on the track, wall control box, kickplate and yellow bollards

Sliding

Automatic sliding doors

The same sliding door with an electric operator on the track and a wall-mounted control. The door opens for the forklift and closes behind it, so it is not left standing open.

Best for: Forklift traffic, busy freezers, distribution.

3D model of a walk-in freezer with an automatic bi-part sliding door, two insulated panels parting from the centre

Sliding

Bi-part sliding doors

Two leaves that part from the centre and slide in opposite directions. Each leaf travels half the opening, so a wide door needs less clear wall on either side.

Best for: Wide openings with limited side wall.

3D model of a walk-in cooler with a powered vertical lift door raised between two guide tracks under the roof, with counterweight tubes, a control box and bollards

Wide openings

Vertical lift doors

The insulated leaf rises straight up between two guide channels, balanced by a counterweight tube each side. Manual or powered operation, specified per opening.

Best for: Openings with no side wall for a slide. Needs about a door height of clear wall above.

3D model of a walk-in cooler with an insulated roll-up door, coil hood above the opening and yellow bollards

Wide openings

Roll-up doors

The curtain coils into a head box above the opening and runs in side guides. It takes no wall space beside the opening and no floor space in front of it.

Best for: Loading areas and high-traffic cold room openings.

3D model of a walk-in cooler fronted with a run of four glass display doors, shelving behind the glass, one door open

Retail fronts

Glass display doors

A run of glass reach-in doors built into the front wall of a walk-in cooler or freezer. Customers pull product from the sales floor while staff restock from inside the cold room.

Best for: Convenience stores, grocery, gas stations, beer and dairy runs.

Cooler door vs freezer door

What changes when the door runs below zero.

Figures are for Coldmatic swing doors. Sliding, vertical lift, and roll-up doors are specified per opening on the quote.

01
Insulated leaf

A thicker door below freezing

Cooler
3″ insulated leaf
Freezer
4″ insulated leaf

The door is the thinnest point in the envelope and the one that opens all day. A freezer door steps up in thickness to match the colder wall around it.

02
Frame + gasket

Heat in the frame, so the seal does not freeze

Cooler
Magnetic perimeter gasket
Freezer
Heated frame + heater wire

On a freezer door, a heater wire runs around the frame so the gasket never freezes to the jamb. That is the part to check first when a freezer door starts sticking or icing.

03
Hardware

Hinges, latch, and closer

Cooler
Kason cam-lift hinges, latch
Freezer
Same, with inside release

Cam-lift hinges pull the door shut on their own and a latch with an inside release means nobody gets locked in. Kason hardware is standard on Coldmatic swing doors.

04
Protection

Built for carts and forklifts

Cooler
Kickplate, vision window
Freezer
Kickplate, step sill, bollards

Diamond-plate kickplates take the cart and pallet hits, and steel bollards keep forklifts off the frame. A vision window lets staff see the other side before they push through.

Door makers

Built in Ontario, installed by our crew.

  • Coldmatic: insulated swing and sliding doors with Kason hinges, latches, and closers. The door on most WFE walk-ins.
  • Specialty doors: sliding, bi-part, vertical lift, personnel, and high-traffic doors from other Ontario makers, for warehouse and processing cold rooms.
  • One quote: the door goes on the same quote as the insulated panels and refrigeration, so the opening, frame, and heater circuit are planned together.

Repair & replacement

A door that sticks, ices, or will not seal.

  • Door repair: gaskets, hinges and closers, and heated door frames on any brand of walk-in, by our own technicians. See repair or replace.
  • Used doors in stock: insulated walk-in doors from our Mississauga warehouse, listed in the for-sale catalog.
  • Plan the whole box: place the door on your walk-in in 3D with the walk-in configurator.

FAQ

Questions door buyers ask first.

What doors does WFE install on walk-in coolers and freezers?

Swing doors, man doors, sliding doors, automatic sliding doors, bi-part sliding doors, vertical lift doors, roll-up doors, and glass display doors. We supply them from Coldmatic and other Ontario door makers and install them with our own crew, on a new walk-in or as part of a cold storage build.

What is the difference between a walk-in cooler door and a freezer door?

A freezer door has a thicker insulated leaf (4 inch on a Coldmatic swing door, against 3 inch for a cooler) and a heated frame with a heater wire, so the gasket never freezes to the jamb. A cooler door seals with a magnetic perimeter gasket. Both use Kason self-closing hinges and a latch with an inside release.

When is a sliding door better than a swing door?

When the aisle in front of the walk-in has no room for a door to swing, or the opening needs to be wider than a swing door allows. Sliding refrigerator doors also suit pallet-jack and forklift traffic. If the traffic is heavy, an automatic sliding door opens and closes on its own; if the side wall is short, a bi-part door splits the travel in half.

Do you install glass display doors on walk-in coolers?

Yes. For convenience stores, grocery, and gas stations we build the sales-floor wall of a walk-in cooler or freezer as a run of glass display doors. Customers pull product from the front and staff restock from inside the cold room. See reach-in and glass-door refrigeration for the full store build.

Can you repair the door on my existing walk-in?

Yes. Our own technicians repair door gaskets, hinges and closers, and heated door frames on walk-ins of any brand. A frost line around the door or water on the floor usually means a gasket job, done in one visit. See walk-in repair or replace.

Which door manufacturers do you use?

Coldmatic, with Kason hardware, on most walk-ins. Sliding, bi-part, vertical lift, and high-traffic doors come from other Ontario door makers. Building in Ontario keeps replacement parts and matching doors close to home.
