5-point inspection

Five things to verify
before you pay for any used unit.

Use this if you are shopping a used walk-in freezer for sale elsewhere too. The same checks apply whether a listing calls it a used commercial freezer or a commercial freezer second hand. WFE inspects all five on every refurbished unit and gives you the inspection report before you commit.

The single biggest predictor of remaining service life. Pull the data plate, check the build date.

Under 10 years
10 to 15 years
Over 15 years
Older units run, just budget for a compressor failure within 3 to 5 years.

Hard fail. Any seller quoting around panel replacement is hiding this.

A leak you will pay for in energy cost forever. Gaskets are cheap to replace before delivery and expensive to ignore.

Deep Dive

More on used commercial refrigeration, lifetime cost math, and inventory range.

When used commercial refrigeration makes sense, and when it does not

Used and refurbished walk-ins are the right call for three operator profiles. First, a startup or independent restaurant that needs commercial cold storage now and cannot justify a full new-build capital outlay. Second, a multi-location operator who needs a fourth or fifth backup unit for an interim site. Third, a contractor staging a buildout with a hard cost ceiling. Used commercial refrigeration is the wrong call when your unit is going into a 24/7 high-throughput facility (food processing, grocery anchor, cannabis cure room) where a 5 to 8 year remaining-life unit is a liability. We will quote new if used is not the right fit.

Used walk-in coolers and freezers — full inventory range

WFE’s used inventory rotates continuously based on replacement-side projects and operator buyouts. Typical stock at any given time includes 8×8 through 10×12 used commercial walk-in coolers and walk-in fridges (the GTA restaurant standard), 10×10 through 12×16 used commercial walk-in freezers (food service back-of-house standard), occasional combo cooler-freezer units pulled from grocery replacements, and a small inventory of used commercial refrigerators, commercial fridges used in restaurant trade-ins, and reach-in freezers we have refurbished. Listings outside our shop sometimes label these as commercial freezers second hand. Same product category, different listing nomenclature. We do not publish a stock catalogue because units move within days of being listed. Current inventory photos and unit-level spec sheets are available on request. Call (905) 565-0291 with the cubic-foot range and operating temp range you need and we will send a same-day shortlist of used refrigeration equipment currently in the workshop. Benchmarking used against new? See the walk-in cooler cost guide for what a new build runs.

The lifetime cost math: new vs refurbished

A new commercial walk-in cooler installed in Ontario is a full new-build capital outlay, depending on size, finish, and refrigeration tier. A WFE-refurbished walk-in cooler or used commercial fridge in the 8×8 to 10×12 range lands at a fraction of that installed cost, including delivery, install, refrigeration recharge, and 3-month warranty. The savings are real, but the lifetime math is different: a new walk-in lasts 15 to 20 years, a refurbished one lasts 5 to 10 from purchase date depending on starting condition. Cost-per-year-of-life is often comparable. Refurbished wins when the operator needs working capital today more than they need a 20-year unit. New wins when total cost of ownership matters more than upfront cash, and a repair-or-replace decision on a failing existing unit often tips the math one way or the other.

FAQ

Questions buyers always ask us first.

Is buying a used or refurbished walk-in cooler actually safe?

Yes, when the unit has been inspected against the right checklist: refrigeration plant age, panel insulation condition, door gasket integrity, floor heat-trace on freezers, and refrigerant type. Every WFE refurbished unit gets a full workshop pass and a written inspection report before delivery. The risk on used commercial refrigeration is buying from a flipper who doesn’t install.

How much can I save buying a used walk-in cooler vs new?

A WFE-refurbished walk-in cooler lands at a fraction of comparable new-build cost installed. Exact savings depend on starting unit condition, refrigeration spec, and delivery distance, so we quote each unit individually rather than publish a fixed discount. Call (905) 565-0291 with the size and temperature you need and we will give you a real number.

What kind of warranty comes with a used or refurbished walk-in?

WFE-refurbished walk-ins ship with a 3-month warranty on the refrigeration plant: compressor, condenser, evaporator, and electrical. Manufacturer warranty on used refrigeration components is generally not transferable.

Do you have used commercial freezers in stock right now?

Stock rotates continuously based on replacement-side projects and operator buyouts. Commercial freezers used in restaurant and grocery back-of-house operations are our fastest-rotating category. Call (905) 565-0291 with the cubic-foot range, operating temperature, and door configuration you need; we will send a same-day shortlist of what is currently in the workshop.

Can I trade in my old walk-in cooler when I buy from WFE?

On replacement-side projects, yes. If WFE is installing your new walk-in and your old unit is in workable condition, we will quote a trade-in credit against the new build. Credit amounts depend on unit age, refrigeration condition, and resale potential. See the walk-in cooler repair-or-replace page if you are still deciding which side of that call your existing unit lands on. Standalone trade-ins with no new build attached are case-by-case.

Do you sell used reach-in coolers and reach-in freezers?

Occasionally, when reach-in inventory comes through on a multi-unit operator buyout. Reach-in inventory volume is much smaller than walk-in inventory. See the reach-in refrigeration page for full detail on new and refurbished reach-in commercial fridges and freezers.

Where does WFE deliver used commercial refrigeration?

Anywhere in Ontario from our Mississauga workshop. Standard delivery and install windows: 1 to 2 weeks for units ready in the workshop, 3 to 6 weeks if a refurbishment pass is needed first. GTA-core projects (Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Vaughan) get the shortest install windows. Northern Ontario (Sudbury and beyond) runs on a scheduled-install basis.

Do you sell used commercial fridges for sale outside the GTA?

Yes. WFE ships used commercial fridges for sale anywhere in Ontario from the Mississauga workshop, and to other Canadian provinces on a scheduled-delivery basis. Reach-in fridges, walk-in fridges, and combo cooler-freezer units are all sold pre-owned when inventory comes in. Call (905) 565-0291 with what you need and we will send a same-day shortlist of what is on the floor.
