Floral refrigeration: purpose-built floral fridges for Ontario florists.

Floral refrigeration is not food refrigeration. A floral cooler holds 1-2°C and 85-95% relative humidity, the opposite of the dry, low-humidity envelope a standard food walk-in is built for. Run that humidity wrong and the stems dehydrate; let the cabinet drift below 0°C and you freeze the product. Most contractors quote a stripped-down food cooler and call it a floral unit. WFE specs floral refrigeration as its own product category, engineered around the high-humidity envelope flowers need.

03
Floor Insulated panel floor, sealed-seam with a centre drain and an aluminum or galvanized finish. No glycol heat needed at cooler temperature.
04
Doors Coldmatic insulated entry door with self-closing cam-lift hinges and a magnetic gasket; sliding or pallet doors on wholesale builds for dock access.
05
Refrigeration and controls Self-contained at retail scale; 12'×16'+ wholesale builds use remote condensing and segmented zones for short-vase-life product. Humidification module on the supply air, 0°C freeze-protection floor.
06
Delivery across Canada We deliver and install floral coolers across Ontario, with scheduled delivery to other provinces in Canada on request. Floral cooler Canada and floral refrigerator inquiries typically need install-included pricing, not equipment-only quotes.

Fig. 03 · What each part does

The four things
that matter.

What each part of a floral fridge does for your stems and your storefront.

01 · Humidity band 85-95% RH
90%
High humidity, narrow temperature band.

Most food walk-ins run 35-45% RH in heating season; cut flowers need 85-95% RH year-round, and standard refrigeration over-dries the air. We spec humidified supply air, oversized evaporator coils at higher saturated suction, and panel humidity control to hold the band tight.

What this means for you Stems stay hydrated
02 · Freeze line 1-2°C deadband
0°C
Never crosses the freeze line.

Flowers freeze at 0°C, and a standard walk-in can dip below that during defrost or compressor recovery. We hold floral-cooler controls to a 1-2°C deadband above 0°C and time defrost so the cabinet never crosses into freeze.

What this means for you No freeze damage
03 · Glass-front 200+ cycles/day
200+
Glass-front display, built for retail traffic.

Retail florists usually want a glass-front display walk-in so customers can see product without opening the door. The glazing has to be anti-fog rated, the door seals have to handle constant cycling, and the interior lighting needs to be cool-rendering so reds and pinks read true.

What this means for you Sells off the floor
04 · Footprint 6'×8' to 10'×12'
6×8ft
Fits the storefront you already have.

Most retail florist coolers are 6'×8' to 10'×12'; wholesale operations run larger. We design at both scales: tight retail units that fit existing storefronts without expensive renovation, and wholesale units that handle truck deliveries of pre-cut stems through to next-day fulfilment.

What this means for you No renovation needed

Deep Dive

More on floral refrigeration, retail vs wholesale & airflow.

Expand any section for the full detail on why floral refrigeration differs from food, retail vs wholesale cold storage, mixed-use coolers, and air circulation.

Why Floral Refrigeration Is Engineered Differently Than Food Refrigeration

Floral refrigeration (sometimes called flower refrigeration) diverges from food cold storage on humidity, temperature, and airflow: a 90% RH setpoint instead of food's incidental humidity, a tight 1-2°C band instead of a food walk-in's wider 2-4°C, and gentle circulation instead of the aggressive blast a produce cooler throws. The mechanical categories overlap, but the controls, evaporator sizing, and air handling all differ, so a contractor selling you a standard food walk-in as a flower cooler is selling a unit that dries out your stems and freezes your tulips.

Retail Florist vs Wholesale Florist Cold Storage

Retail florists need small display coolers that fit a storefront budget and the showroom design; wholesale florists need volume cold storage for pallet-quantity deliveries and 24-72 hour turnover before next-day fulfilment. Retail builds typically ship in 3-5 weeks, wholesale builds in 6-10 weeks depending on scale and refrigeration complexity. We build for independent retail florists, wedding and event florist studios, grocery-attached floral departments, wholesale flower importers, farmers-market florists scaling to fixed retail, and funeral-supply florists.

Mixed-Use Coolers for Florists Selling Adjacent Product

Many independent florists also sell potted plants, gift items, or specialty produce that has different cold-storage requirements. We can design a cooler with separate zones, or a smaller secondary cooler, so the cut-flower environment stays optimal while the adjacent product gets the conditions it needs.

Air Circulation Without Direct Blast

Cut flowers in direct evaporator airflow dry out faster than flowers in still air. We position the evaporator and shape the supply airflow so it circulates the cabinet for temperature stability without blowing directly across the product.

Questions florists
ask first.

01

What temperature and humidity does a florist cooler need?

Most cut flowers hold quality at 1-2°C and 85-95% relative humidity. Some tropical varieties (orchids, anthuriums, birds of paradise) want warmer storage at 10-13°C. We spec to your dominant product category and accept a trade-off on outliers, or we build a multi-zone cooler if your volume justifies it. Humidity control is the harder engineering problem; standard refrigeration without humidification will run dry and shorten stem life.
02

Can you build a glass-front display cooler for our retail floor?

Yes. Glass-front floral display walk-ins are one of our standard configurations. Anti-fog glazing, cool-rendering interior LED lighting that renders red and pink accurately, double-pane or triple-pane glass for thermal performance, and reinforced gasketing for the customer-facing doors that cycle 200+ times a day. We integrate the cooler glazing with the rest of your storefront design so it doesn't read as an industrial unit dropped into a retail space.
03

How do you keep the cooler from freezing flowers during defrost?

We tune the temperature controls to run with a 1-2°C floor above 0°C, so even the coldest cabinet readings stay clear of freeze, and we adjust defrost timing and method (hot-gas vs electric vs time-initiated) so the defrost cycle doesn't pull cabinet temperatures across the freeze line. Most off-the-shelf controls run defrost on a schedule regardless of cabinet state; we wire ours to skip unnecessary defrost cycles and protect the product.
04

What does a retail florist cooler cost in Ontario?

Pricing varies with size, configuration, and refrigeration spec. We quote against your specific build after a site walk: floor space, ceiling height, refrigeration tie-in, glazing type and area, electrical service. As a rough budget range, a small retail glass-front display cooler runs significantly less than a comparable wholesale walk-in. Final numbers come in our quote letter, not on a website.
05

Can we add a floral cooler to an existing florist storefront without renovating?

Usually yes. Most retail florist coolers are 6'×8' to 10'×12' and can be installed inside an existing storefront without structural changes. The constraints are usually electrical service (some coolers need a dedicated 240V circuit), refrigeration tie-in (self-contained units are easier; remote condensing needs an exterior or mechanical-room mounting location), and floor flatness for the panel base. We do a site walk before quoting to flag any constraints.
06

Does WFE service walk-ins you didn't install?

Yes, on the diagnostic side. We run the same-day diagnostic call across Ontario regardless of who installed the unit and route fixable units to our vetted refrigeration repair partner network. We install; our partners repair. Floral coolers especially benefit from remote monitoring (high-temp + low-temp alarms texting the manager) because flowers don't survive long at the wrong setpoint and a Saturday-night failure can cost a week of wedding inventory. See our walk-in cooler repair-or-replace page for the full diagnostic framework.
