One truck, one trip, one build.

Kapuskasing was planned around its paper mill as the "Model Town of the North," and it is still the trade centre for a stretch of Highway 11 that runs from Cochrane (119 km east) to Hearst (96 km west). Our shop is nine hours south in Mississauga, so every Kapuskasing walk-in is planned as a single trip. The panels, refrigeration, and crew leave together, and the box is commissioned before the truck heads home.

01 — Restaurant Refrigeration Kapuskasing

Cochrane to Hearst,
the Highway 11 kitchen runs through Kap.

Kapuskasing's restaurant refrigeration and grocery demand comes from the downtown and Riverside Drive core, the institutional kitchens that feed the town, and the grocers and restaurants serving Hearst, Cochrane, Smooth Rock Falls, and Moonbeam along Highway 11. Very few southern Ontario refrigeration contractors will quote this far north.

In a Kapuskasing kitchen the walk-in is the one piece of restaurant refrigeration nobody can wait on, because a replacement part is a Highway 11 freight run away. So we build with parts a Northern tech can source: KeepRite or Heatcraft refrigeration, documented refrigerant charges, and condensers you can reach for service. Every walk-in cooler we put in comes from the same in-house crew as our GTA installs.

02 — Kapuskasing Commercial Refrigeration

GM tested cars here for 51 winters.
Your freezer lives through the same ones.

General Motors ran its Kapuskasing Proving Ground for 51 years, until it announced the closure in October 2024, because few places in Ontario get this cold. January nights average around −22°C and GM tested components as cold as −45°C. In a Kapuskasing commercial refrigeration build, that cold drives the heat-load math and the choice of outdoor condensing unit.

A walk-in freezer here gets its cold-climate spec priced into the quote: head-pressure control so the condenser starts and holds pressure in deep cold, and refrigeration sized for the swing between a heated kitchen and a February night. You approve one number for a box that works in February, not a change order after the first cold snap.

03 — The Highway 11 Run

One route, one crew, one return trip.

Kapuskasing sits in the middle of the 215 km stretch of Highway 11 between Cochrane and Hearst, so a trip here rarely serves one customer. We route installs, warranty visits, and maintenance with our Timmins and Kirkland Lake stops. If a neighbouring operator in Smooth Rock Falls, Moonbeam, or Hearst is planning a build, tell us early and one trip covers both.

The crew that builds your box is the crew that answers for it, with no warranty work handed off to a company you have never met. For most issues we diagnose by phone first and ship the part. Because the drive is nine hours, Kapuskasing installs go on a maintenance schedule instead of waiting for an emergency.

04 — Cochrane District Permits & Service Window

The site visit and measure-up happen on one Northern trip, and the drawings and load calculation get done back in Mississauga. Once the install date is set, the panels, refrigeration, and fittings for the whole build load onto one truck, so nothing waits on a part coming up Highway 11. The crew stays until the box is commissioned and holding temperature.

The electrical work goes through an ESA notification, and the Town of Kapuskasing building department issues a building permit where the build needs one, with permit windows of two to four weeks. WFE files the full package and books inspections to line up with the install date.

01 Will a Mississauga contractor really install a walk-in nine hours north in Kapuskasing?
Yes. Kapuskasing builds run on scheduled Northern trips routed with our Timmins and Kirkland Lake work, and the in-house crew that builds our GTA walk-ins does the install. We commit the dates up front and commission the box before the crew starts the drive home.
02 How long from quote to a running walk-in in Kapuskasing?
Typically 8 to 12 weeks for a standard restaurant or grocery walk-in. Most of that is planning: the install date is booked 6 to 10 weeks ahead so the materials, the inspections, and the crew all land in the same week. The on-site build itself takes about as long as one in the GTA.
03 Do you serve Hearst, Cochrane, Smooth Rock Falls, and Timmins too?
Yes. A Kapuskasing trip covers the Highway 11 corridor from Cochrane to Hearst, and we route through Timmins and Kirkland Lake on the same run. Bundling stops on one route is how we keep Northern installs affordable, so tell us early if a neighbouring operator is also planning a build.
04 Who works on a Kapuskasing walk-in if it goes down in February?
For a unit that is down and holding product, call a local Northern Ontario refrigeration tech first, because nine hours each way is too long for an emergency. We build with standard parts and documented refrigerant charges so that tech can work on it. Anything the install warranty covers, our crew comes back for, and we pair Kapuskasing installs with two to three scheduled maintenance visits a year.
05 Does a Kapuskasing winter change how the walk-in is specced?
Yes. January nights average around −22°C and cold snaps run well past −35°C, so we size refrigeration for winter recovery cycles and spec outdoor condensing units with head-pressure control for deep sub-zero starts. Panel thickness (4-inch or 6-inch) is set for the room the box sits in and the temperature it holds.
